Good Morning, Carmrades! Today we are going to put the 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance on the Dyno to see how much horsepower it has and what the difference is in comparison to the previous model. Also, we learn it the hard way that you really should engage the dyno mode (which is hidden) before you attempt any runs.

In Norway cars are taxed on part according to their power output. The registration papers for my 2021 LR model 3 say it has 368Kw(=493hp!!). Is that too high? Since we are taxed on the power output I would have thought the government would require pretty accurate power figures before allowing import of the cars by Tesla. I haven’t paid for the extra upgraded power to do 0-100 half a second faster. Would have expected the Perfomance to have maybe 100hp more or something

@fann0727 so,,,, probably in this case you better know how dyno is working. Looks like guys from Dynojet engineering department should ask you about your opinion next time before they will build a dyno.

    2. fann0727
      fann0727
      Před 2 dny

@Oleg Kucherov if you know how dyno machine is based on, you won't think torque is a estimated param. Cause dyno first use weight mess resistance to calculate how much torque the wheel gave to the rotor then use Hall device to have rpm, then give you both numbers. You just name any other youtube dyno result with lower torque and higher hp then I will say you are right. ok i will just give you answer: the answer is NO.

    3. Oleg Kucherov
      Oleg Kucherov
      Před 2 dny

@fann0727 Sure, its a math, and in this case POWER is a measured parameter, TORQUE is calculated parameter, i didn’t dig in these runs dip, task was to see the difference in tow cars with same SOC and software. And you clearly see 2021 car is more powerful. I checked rpm scale, and speed scale, results was same.

@Honda EP3 High powered BEVs in general are amazing in snow. Even RWD only cars still do very well. Snow & Ice Lakes is basically the natural play ground for Performance EVs.

Yeah I hope Misha et al. are reading the comments here - there are Tesla owners giving valuable input on this video. Here's mine: State of Charge matters - I hope that as people continue making videos like this, they get into the habit of publishing the SoC throughout testing. Temperature also matters quite a lot - especially with the newer 2021+ cars, which (as of now) appear to be FAR more temperature-sensitive than the previous years. Finally, there are videos out there of people measuring the kWh output of the battery. Electric motors are insanely efficient and output the vast majority of the power going in. DragTimes has published videos of peak power output of the Tesla Model 3 being on the order of ~580 hp. I *think* this may be a more accurate comparison of what we're used to measuring "at the crank" but who knows - as the guy said in the video, tons of debate on this.

You really need to test the old and new Tesla back to back with the same software version. Tesla releases efficency and power tweaks OTA. It could be that the old model 3 with new software produces the same power curve as the 2021. I've noticed a moderate efficency gain in software version 2020.48.35.5. Compared to the old versions. One Mistake in your comparison: Because you not only compare the old 2019/2020 Model with a new 2021 Model. You also yompare the old Software Version with the new one. So be aware that tesla is able to change all your measured things with an software update. In this case, to be fair, you have to measure an old Model with a new Model at the same Software Version.

520 odd wheel horsepower is about 550-560 at the engine/motor with less than 10% drivetrain loss. Tesla may have quoted it lower to take into account power loss from batteries warming up or being low on charge but it's definitely under rated at optimal conditions.

  75. HeerYanus
    HeerYanus
    Před 11 dny

Is the dyno not automatically correcting for losses etc? I think its much easier for Tesla to ensure 450 hp on the wheels because the losses in an electric car will be much more predictable. But if you than apply the typical losses margin from an ICE vehicle to the number found on the wheels, which it does to find the engine power itself, it will jow overestimate it.

Impressive but until I can be confident that I can do 300km of twisty roads at a fast pace without looking for a power plug...I'll stick with ICE

WTF 300km /186 miles is very easy to achieve on public road. That's nearly 100 miles less than easily achievable real world range. The only way you could do that bad is Illegal Street Racing. That is crazy consumption rate for Public Roads. Sticking to ICE in that case is Pointless. BEVs can already easily do that.

that makes absolutely 0 sense, the power is calculated from the torque on the dyno, the red torque line is bellow the blue through out the graph, how could the power be higher? power is just a function of torque and rpm. Only thing that could cause this is some ambient related compensation on the dyno software.

Oh I see what you mean. Yes, that's weird. Maybe the dyno is trying to figure "crank" horsepower and all the electric motor management, etc. messes it up? They say not, and it's wheel horse power. No idea!

You now have 650 HP! Super secret that only a hand full of people know about. ;) :)

The missing punch could be a result from a too cold battery - reduced current, reduced torque. The new battery in the Performance is more temperature sensitive than the older ones. Heat scavenging from the battery to the cabin in the new models with heat pump is a factor that can cool down the battery on a cold day more than you'd expect. Check Teslabjorn's channel for his tests of his 2019 M3P vs. 2021 LR vs. 2021 M3P. I think ScanMyTesla is a must if you want to know more about how the car is behaving at different battery temperatures.

I think it's just the new batteries from LG, they are known to perform slightly worse when it comes to supplying energy and charging. I think their longevity is supposed to be quiet a bit better and they might be a bit cheaper too, but we will have to wait a couple of years to see the degradation on them. Overall it only increases charging by 1-2 minutes compared to the previous battery and as you can see it only has this "punch" for 70-80, which is probably a timeframe of 0.4 seconds or sth and afterwards the performance was relatively even.

From a fan's perspective, I appreciate that your channel isn't this massive pump dogma. So many other channels just hype BTC up to and make these sweeping price targets and "wow factor announcements" and frankly, I am getting tired of it. Nobody knows the future. Logic says that markets, sooner or later, have to correct to the reality levels. But then again, they might not to. I really don't know. All I know is one thing: My HODL position will stay untouched for the next 1,2,3,4,5 years, I have a diverse portfolio on which I trade with Kim Arnett's signals to multiply my profits. Bitcoin Ben and the majority of the videos uploaded on the Altcoin Buzz channel made references to Her superb Strategy. I have made over 9 Btc profit since October Rally, not from buying at dips but from day trading, thanks to my mentor Kim Arnett, Y'all can reach out to her on Telegram @ KimberlyarnettFX01 or WhatsApp: +16783410898 to make a massive profit off the market rather than just waiting for the price to skyrocket before you can make a profit...

Many of the power numbers you see on German cars are from tests done in the worst possible conditions. So instead of buying 600hp car that only makes all 600hp 20 times a year, you buy a 600hp car that only falls down to 600hp 20 times a year. The cheaper insurance is also nice.
