Good Morning, Carmrades. Yesterday, the talk of Automotive Social Media community was the "25 000 Brand Deal" tweet by @Chris Harris on Cars : harrismonkey/status/1358790318011932674
What did actually happen? Why did this news come out? Is this a disgraceful anomaly or nothing out of ordinary? @Robert Mitchell and I have called Iain @Litchfield Motors to hear his story and opinion and gave you our take on it. But what do you think?

Misha, I only follow you guys because you're great, honest human beings. The rest of the things you do are just very nice extras and I enjoy it very much and I thank you honestly for it, BUT....to answer your question from the video...what do we think about it...My answer is...look up the word "influence(er)" in the disctionary...it literally means to change someone's view on something...now that sounds very well and dandy...but, as you guys pointed out very well in the video...this is NOT to be done at any cost...otherwise it is just snake oil selling...and very disingenuous and damaging for the rest of the folks that genuinely want to help promote other good, genuine products. And just to add my concern here...is that I see a lot of people that just buy, with their hard earned money, shady stuff of the internet or whatever, because someone influenced them to do it....that is nothing they've been promised by these so called influencers. So they end up losing money and the influencer making shady money. That is just not right no matter how you look at it (well honestly that is...). Anyways, thank you for being honest. Thank you for being open and transparent with what you guys do. And even if it sounds small, it is hugely appreciated. Thank you and good work!

For me the question is about three things: 1) honesty to your audience: If you're doing paid promotions, don't pretend its your honest opinion when it's paid for. 2) respect for your business partners: Don't reach out to work on a project with a business partner in a way which is disrespectful to them and their product, 3) Don't be greedy in deals and know the value of your audience. In this instance this is about 2 and 3 - and it may also have been about 1). If you don't show respect and are greedy expect to be publicly shown up. This shows a lack of maturity from the marketing team. Massively overplaying their value. Expecting a guaranteed upfront fee plus a share of income is insane. Doing all of that while not showing respect for a prospective business partner, is naive.

So, by now everyone knows who the "influencer" in question is; his posted response on Instagram was pathetic and disingenuous to a nauseating degree. ANYONE who employs an agent or agency on their behalf to represent them commercially DOES NOT GET TO PRETEND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT AGENT IS DOING ON THEIR BEHALF! Period, full stop. Mr. JWW 's claim that he "...didn't believe what Litchfield stated happened to be the case." is fraudulent. No one in business EVER empowers agents to make business proposals on their behalf without knowing the parameters beforehand. So now Mr. JWW is a liar as well as a greedy bastard. Finally in a startling admission of his own stupidity and guilt Mr. JWW saw fit to play the victim in all of this on his Instagram posting by including that ludicrous "Cyberbullying" BULLSHIT at the end of his non-denial, denial post. What a cowardly, chickenshit move. Pretending to be a victim as a result of your OWN despicable action makes that initial action orders of magnitude WORSE than it otherwise would have been had you just fessed up. I now can't stand a single thing about Mr. JWW. He's a scumbag. He destroyed himself by being first: greedy and then a coward. Not a great look.

I just read the Instagram post from Mr JWW on this and he is deflecting this to cyberbullying. I'm not sure that is the focus here. It's trying to pimp out a supplier for using his donated parts.

There's nothing wrong with marketing or cold calling per se. The trouble I see in this instance, is that somebody has grossly overestimated their precieved worth. Imagine showing up unannounced, looking for a job and demanding set payment before any sort of work was offered. That takes a lot of balls. You better be prepared to establish what value you are offering the potential client before you start talking the terms of compensation. And those terms had better reflect the norms of the greater industry. What I'd love to know is how they arrived at 25k? What metrics were used to determine this number? The other important point is this, when you are cold calling, you are the one activity seeking work. And as such you are not necessarily the one in the driver's seat when negotiating the terms. This is about boundaries, and somebody clearly overstepped theirs.

The person in question is building a brand and business first and as a priority, off the back of being an enthusiast car channel. The car part is a means to an end. I think I prefer it when CStreers simply do a paid declared advert and do the whole awkward selling bit, like my fave line from a great channel on restoring cars where he does an advert for a men's ball shaver with the opening line " not only do I restore cars, I also restore my balls".

I've been watching both Misha and Robert's video for a while now and I fully understand Robert's position on "influencers" but honestly this whole thing seems overboard to me as no one have real evidence on who did it, allegedly Mr JWW but he already clarified it on his instagram. Believe him or not, I have no problem with people voicing their individual opinion but theres a fine line to that, went over then it's just cancel culture which is just absolute cancer as people don't have to be responsible for what they say online with a anonymous account. I love what both of you are doing with apex and youtube but this video to me seem a little overboard.

  25. ImBarryScottCSS
    Před 15 dny

I actually don't have a problem with them asking the question. This is all a business at the end of the day and if you believe that is what your brand's worth then go ahead and ask. Buuuuuuuuut you can't then be mad when someone says fuck off and tells people what you're asking for. If you were being reasonable that wouldn't have happened and you only have yourself to blame. This is also on the caveat that obviously any content done in this way must be fully declared, your viewers must know what is sponsored and what is not. Right now things are happening at a slightly lower level where the viewers have no idea of the seedy deals being done to push certain brands.

Firstly, I don’t think Chris Harris had any right to disclose this, he professes to dislike influencers, yet he is one himself. Secondly, it was Shmee’s management who wrongly said it was James, as Ian Litchfield said and Robert eluded to, it wasn’t him, it may well have been his management company making decisions above their pay grade. This will hurt Mr JWWs channel, I feel if there was such a business offer it should have been politely declined and kept between the parties involved instead of childishly going around telling everyone about it. Not cool by Chris and I am a bit disgusted at Shmee’s mangers comments on it.

The value of an ‘influencer’ would be to take a well funded but anonymous company with a product to the target demographic that is shared with the influencer. The fundamental mistake this ‘Petrol Head Influencer’ made is that Lichfield’s target market are already aware of Lichfield products and reputation. You could argue that an Influencer who has involvement with a company such as Lichfield benefits from an increase in their credibility. I suspect if Lichfield need to grow visibility as to the availability of the Yaris products, they just needed to drop a car off to Harry Metcalf.

Madness. Your channel & Robert’s provides honest content on pertinent topics. Due to the immediacy of technology, this medium means influencer ‘content’ can appear often without on the on-screen message “Paid content” (as would normally be seen on genuine content producers). This type of activity is no different to the likes of ‘paid’ 5-star Amazon ratings for unknown products; and in this case an unnamed and as yet unknown influencer.

Good video and on point. For me the amount of money asked is probably more than the avg annual wage in the UK. Also asking for the product is fine along with doing a series of video about the development etc. Getting this for free and making video content off this is perfectly fine. Asking for another huge sum on top of that is basically just taking the piss - be ashamed. I also agree that this has a more negative effect for the rest of the youtuber's out there. Next phone call to the same company is a plain no and sorry. It can on do more damage than good.

Funny Video Gents and a good shout to IL for being honest. My feeling is that the Marketing Co. have not only mis-understood/ mis-placed and mis-represented it's clients interests, values and requirements from potential future Brand Deals. Often comes back to 'if you want the job done properly, then do it yourself'. As Litchfield mentioned, he would've worked out a deal to supply and fit parts for an Influencer/ Client, but to ask for Money and Commission from future sales is a Bad Marketing Ploy/ practice on the whole YT community. The YT video with CH/ IL & Co, never mentioned or revealed who this person is by name. So it's everybody else whose been commenting on it, who has guessed who it possibly could be. In the end of the day it's down to the Influencer and his Marketing Co. to resolve the situation here. CH & Co. were simply highlighting/ disgussing both the right & wrong way to approach these potential opportunities.

I do not want to defend anything, but i think that in other areas of influencing like fashion, selling your "influence" has been a thing for years. I would even say that this aggressive approach can be very common in other fields. So you better get used to it, I'm afraid, this will not go away. The car influencer area has grown so extremely quickly lately, that everyone wants to get a piece of it and some will be ready to make such aggressive approaches. Right now, i can think of one or two big influencer in relation to cars where i have the feeling they are "selling" their content and their enthusiasm for "the product" seems to be overplayed.

Great video and very balanced analysis. Defining the the line between reasonable and unacceptable might be tricky at times. Having said this if the facts have been correctly portrayed then the influencer in question needs to liaise with his marketing team to make sure that future deals are fair and equitable to both parties. I hope that he has the strength of character to acknowledge to Lichfield and his subscribers that this should have been handled a whole lot better.

@ImBarryScottCSS grow up? Oh please, first of all, do your research before saying stupid things. He is a hypocrite, indeed, because he says himself he’s not an influencer and than he took that position influencing minds without knowing the full truth. So he is a hypocrite for doing something he did say he was against and that he was not. So, I turn it back to you, grow up!

@gabriel gabes Why is he a hypocrite? He just reported a story he had heard, and not even for personal gain, of anything it was altruistic. What can noone talk now incase they influence someone's opinion? Grow up

@gabriel gabes He's a motoring journalist. It's literally a part of his job. This isn't anything new. I don't know why people are surprised by anything here. Fuck me, nobody shamed Jeremy Clarkson for being an 'influencer'. I find it absurd that we're just slapping this new label on everything despite the fact that the only thing that has changed in many cases is the use of social media as a means of communication. There's a big difference between individuals using social media to comment on an issue and individuals using said communication as a means of financial or professional gain through distorting fact or representing the opinion of another (ie. Advertising). It is supremely ironic that people take issue with Chris pointing out THIS EXACT PROBLEM has earned him the same label as the person perpetrating this practice.

@gabriel gabes Sounds like a little 'tall poppy syndrome' there. People calling out bullshit has been around long before CStree and Chris strikes me as the type who has plenty of experience rocking the boat. The big difference is he believes what he says. It's not like it's clickbait or anything. Just because something is a little spicy, doesn't mean you can't put the spotlight on it.

I agree with Robert and Misha's comments. I understand Mr. Litchfield's position. I also understand the point of marketing companies. In my experience such companies often overstep the mark. The job of the marketing company is to obtain income for the client. In this case, the client's reputation has been impacted and even the future income potential of this individual. If Mr. Harris had said nothing the impacted parties would have been "quietly" annoyed. Do we owe morality and values to one another? Yes. Does that extend to someone's reputation? I think it does. In a connected world, how should society treat someone's reputation when everyone has an opinion?

I think that the influencer in question just needs to own up for this and accept it as a business error. Whether it was them or the marketing team, the tactics weren't right and unfortunately its gone public.

@Misha: you've been absolutely right! You are contend creators - thats what seperates you from influencers in my eyes. Most of them create stuff but it is only to sell stuff and has no valuable content. Regarding the situation I think that's just brazen. Getting a discount for making a video about the suspension and about the brand is the most you can expect in this situation. Keep it up - like your stuff👍

Good video, and good points raised - glad I came to watch (and hence subscribe, again!). I don't have a problem with the business approach - and interesting for Ian to say if it was the other way around, then a real cash payment would be appropriate for the subsequent marketing production. It's just the scale of the required payment (On the Collecting Cars/Chis Harris video, Ian mentions he expects to sell 30 kits - so effectively a demand of almost £1,000 cash against each sale of £3,000, and further an additional percentage on top of that), and as you mentioned the subsequent journalistic "integrity" of any review - without probably an #ADVERT sticker prominently applied. The supposed "influencer" involved has now come out with a new posting, saying that it was an errant agency and not him. I know from the music industry that "free" agents get paid by negotiating direct payments that are not passed onto the artist. So the cash and percentage request could be for paying for the agents work? But its still under that influencers brand/business, and hence the person needs to take ownership of that inappropriate scale demand (there a re a lot of people saying "Oh it wasn't the person, therefore its not true", but that side steps the issue that that person runs and owns that brand that made the approach) - Good Luck!

What makes me truly angry about the video is that your bad mouthing a youtube creator and ruining his channel when he didn't even have contact with the company and it was his manager and you didn't even wait for the youtuber to issue a response.

Sorry but a content creator's management team would not be offering potential collaborations like that without the blessing of the creator themselves first of all. I don't believe for one second that their management team/person called up Litchfield and made this offer without them being aware that it was happening.

how much did CH pay Litchfield for his repaint on his 911 Touring that would be a good question. :-) or what's his cut on CC auctions ? £25k is nothing people get 1/2 a million for one Photoshoot in other you tube area's or promotions. How much money will this one vid make ? again a great question for a click bait vid, 50k views already. Post in a month what this vid made please.

So honest question about Chris and his comments. Does he get free Porsche's as he seems to be a fanboy/influencer going way back. I'm sure plenty of people have bought that brand based on his reviews. As other industries have done it so if James does it and is just the first "Kardashian" in the space is he that bad. I'm sure the youtube money wont last forever.

First video of yours I've watched - decent balanced debate on what is a really complex subject. Interesting that Robert brought up the issue of travel/accommodation expenses, as it's an issue that could be aimed at traditional print media when they fly first class and are put up in a fancy hotel on a car launch. It's a very fine line. The problem is, with some influencers, there isn't quite enough objective review. They're showing viewers what an awesome time they're having, which is fine but, in a lot of cases, we don't often here open criticism of cars/products if they don't like something, which I think undermines the whole influencer model - no car or product is perfect. In the case of this influencer, he or his team just massively over estimated both his own value, and the revenue potential of the product they were trying to obtain. It was a silly error and, while they appear to now be on the defensive, it has exposed an important debate that we should be having. In terms of brand promotion and commercial deals, there isn't nearly enough transparency in the automotive influencer sphere, so it's good that people are talking about it more.
